Folorunso Alakija Builds $23 Million Hospital to Save Lives and Train Doctors
Folorunso Alakija, Nigeria's wealthiest woman, has unveiled a $23 million medical research and training hospital at Osun State University, aimed at saving lives and educating future healthcare professionals. In a LinkedIn post, Alakija shared insights on the project's development, framing it as a long-standing commitment rather than a mere charitable endeavor. "Seven years ago, we turned the first sod on this ground with a prayer and a vision," she noted, emphasizing the hospital's purpose to benefit both the university and the broader healthcare landscape.
The Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital, inaugurated this week in Osogbo, comprises a 250-bed facility with a valuation of N34 billion. The hospital is equipped with advanced facilities, including MRI suites, radiotherapy units, neonatal intensive care, and 20 clinical departments, designed to provide patient care while fostering the training of doctors and researchers who might otherwise seek opportunities abroad.
Alakija's philanthropic approach stands apart from typical Nigerian philanthropy, which often focuses on superficial gestures. Her initiative aims to ensure sustainable systems and equipment, emphasizing the connection between care and education. Through the Rose of Sharon Foundation, Alakija supports widows and orphans with scholarships, housing, and business funding, while Flourish Africa assists in mentoring women in business and leadership.
Alakija's fortune is rooted in oil, primarily through her stake in Famfa Oil and the Agbami Field. However, her philanthropic strategy prioritizes building institutions that endure beyond the initial accolades.
In light of recent speculation regarding her health and personal life, Alakija has refrained from public statements, opting instead to focus on tangible contributions. The newly established hospital not only bears her name but also that of her husband, indicating her commitment to creating lasting impact and establishing her wealth as a responsibility tied to her community. While many Nigerian elites invest their resources abroad, Alakija chooses to reinforce her ties to her homeland, viewing her wealth as a geographical responsibility.
