US Airstrikes Target Islamic State Terrorists in Nigeria
In a decisive move on Christmas Day, the United States military carried out airstrikes against suspected positions of the Islamic State (IS) in Nigeria. This operation, justified by President Donald Trump, aimed to protect Christians from ongoing violence perpetrated by the Islamist group. Trump made his stance clear on his platform, Truth Social, saying, "I previously warned these terrorists that they would pay a heavy price if they did not stop slaughtering Christians, and tonight it happened."
The military strikes took place primarily in the northwest region of Nigeria, where IS has been accused of perpetuating violence against religious communities. Trump's provocative message continued with further threats: "Merry Christmas to all, including the dead terrorists, of whom there will be many more if they continue to slaughter Christians."
According to the US Department of Defense, the strikes were executed at the behest of Nigerian authorities, as part of a broader security cooperation agreement between the two nations. While the exact number of fatalities remains undisclosed, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denounced the k!llings of innocent Christians and lauded the support of the Nigerian government in this ongoing struggle against terrorism.

Growing Up Without Wrapped Christmas Gifts Under the Tree in Nigeria
Christmas has arrived early this year, and while it feels a little different, it's in the most delightful way.
Growing up as a girl in Nigeria, Africa, my Christmas experiences were shaped by traditions distinct from those of Europe or the Western world. I never had the chance to pick gifts wrapped under a decorated Christmas tree, as is customary in some parts of the world.
Historically, as noted on Wikipedia, the tradition of decorating Christmas trees originated in Germany and Livonia (modern-day Estonia and Latvia), where Protestant Christians began bringing these ornamented trees into their homes.
If it feels like the true essence of Christmas has been overshadowed by an avalanche of wrapping paper and decorations, exploring how other cultures celebrate can be surprisingly grounding. Holiday traditions differ significantly across countries, shaped by factors like climate, history, values, and landscapes. While exchanging gifts remains a common theme in many nations, the customs surrounding them vary greatly. These cherished traditions remind us that Christmas is a deeply personal and unique celebration for everyone who observes it.
For me, growing up, Christmas was magical in its own way. My mother would always buy me beautiful clothes and thoughtful gifts for the holidays. I fondly remember wearing outfits that cost several thousand naira-a big deal back in the 1990s. The joy of getting dressed in these special clothes, attending church services, enjoying festive meals, and visiting relatives who generously gave money as gifts left me with cherished memories.
Nigerian Christmas traditions are a vibrant heritage of culture and family. They encompass colorful celebrations with feasting, heartfelt church services, carol singing, and gift-giving often in monetary form. Many families travel back to their hometowns for the season, especially those living in cities like Lagos. The holiday is an opportunity for reunion and celebration. Nigerians take pride in wearing their finest outfits, indulging in festive meals such as jollof rice and chicken, dancing to lively music, and enjoying fun moments with Father Christmas at popular venues like amusement parks in Apapa during those days. One of my favorite aspects of Nigerian Christmas traditions is the spirit of generosity; gifts, money, and food are exchanged not just among family and friends but also shared with the less fortunate in the community.
Now that I’m older, I find myself reflecting on Christmas differently. Friends and family have already started reaching out, playfully reminding me not to forget their birthday or Christmas gifts. While gift-giving has always taken center stage for me during the festive season, this year has been a bit unusual. Since December began, my little girl and I have been juggling our busy schedules her kindergarten activities combined with my work commitments have left us with very little time to browse for presents.
Still, I managed to stumble upon some delightful clothing and accessories for kids at Gucci. Although I like Louis Vuitton, this time I couldn’t resist picking out some lovely items for my daughter. The staff at Gucci were wonderfully accommodating they made the entire process seamless. All I had to do was collect everything in Frankfurt store. which turned out to be a delightful experience. Special thanks to Ms. M for ensuring it all went smoothly!
I’m planning to set up our Christmas tree today something I’ve been eager to do so my daughter can start embracing these holiday traditions from an early age. As we celebrate this special time of the year, I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas filled with love and joy. May you all have a wonderful New Year ahead. Wishing you warmth, happiness, and countless blessings!

Folorunso Alakija Builds $23 Million Hospital to Save Lives and Train Doctors
Folorunso Alakija, Nigeria's wealthiest woman, has unveiled a $23 million medical research and training hospital at Osun State University, aimed at saving lives and educating future healthcare professionals. In a LinkedIn post, Alakija shared insights on the project's development, framing it as a long-standing commitment rather than a mere charitable endeavor. "Seven years ago, we turned the first sod on this ground with a prayer and a vision," she noted, emphasizing the hospital's purpose to benefit both the university and the broader healthcare landscape.
The Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital, inaugurated this week in Osogbo, comprises a 250-bed facility with a valuation of N34 billion. The hospital is equipped with advanced facilities, including MRI suites, radiotherapy units, neonatal intensive care, and 20 clinical departments, designed to provide patient care while fostering the training of doctors and researchers who might otherwise seek opportunities abroad.
Alakija's philanthropic approach stands apart from typical Nigerian philanthropy, which often focuses on superficial gestures. Her initiative aims to ensure sustainable systems and equipment, emphasizing the connection between care and education. Through the Rose of Sharon Foundation, Alakija supports widows and orphans with scholarships, housing, and business funding, while Flourish Africa assists in mentoring women in business and leadership.
Alakija's fortune is rooted in oil, primarily through her stake in Famfa Oil and the Agbami Field. However, her philanthropic strategy prioritizes building institutions that endure beyond the initial accolades.
In light of recent speculation regarding her health and personal life, Alakija has refrained from public statements, opting instead to focus on tangible contributions. The newly established hospital not only bears her name but also that of her husband, indicating her commitment to creating lasting impact and establishing her wealth as a responsibility tied to her community. While many Nigerian elites invest their resources abroad, Alakija chooses to reinforce her ties to her homeland, viewing her wealth as a geographical responsibility.

Zelenskyy cautions that Russia could launch a major assault on Ukraine during the Christmas holidays.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Monday that intelligence reports indicate Russia might conduct "massive strikes" during the Christmas holiday, while negotiations are ongoing with the US to acquire numerous Patriot systems for air defense. "We know that during these days they may – this is typical for them – execute massive strikes on Christmas," Zelenskyy mentioned in a statement following a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief's Staff. He instructed the intelligence services to enhance their efforts to provide a clear overview after Russia dismissed proposals from Germany and the US for a ceasefire during the holidays. Zelenskyy highlighted that air defense is the "top priority," especially for safeguarding Ukrainian communities on December 23, 24, and 25, while acknowledging a lack of air defense systems. To tackle this issue, he noted that Ukraine is pursuing a "strong contract" with the US to obtain "several dozen" Patriot systems through various initiatives. He also cautioned that Kyiv will react "in a fully logical way" if Russia does not engage seriously in negotiations aimed at concluding the nearly four-year conflict, following the General Staff meeting. "We thoroughly reviewed the situation at the front across all sectors," Zelenskyy stated. He mentioned that Russian forces have notably intensified their attacks in recent weeks, asserting that this has resulted in increased Russian casualties. "We will keep this momentum – if the Russians do not engage with full seriousness in the negotiation process and instead focus their resources on prolonging and escalating the war, we will respond logically – with our actions in response," he added. Zelenskyy indicated that the meeting also covered updates on "our deep strikes," as well as the needs and supply of the defense forces. He noted that the condition of air defense, including coverage of the front and our regions, particularly the Odesa area, was also part of the discussion.
In the meantime, he mentioned that several candidates for the Air Command South commander position have been put forward and decisions are currently being made. Earlier today, Russian officials reported that a car bomb explosion in southern Moscow resulted in the death of Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who was the head of operational training at the Russian General Staff. Kyiv has not provided any direct comments regarding the killing.
Zelenskyy warns of potential 'massive' Russian strikes on Christmas and expresses concern over air defense shortages. He stated that there is a possibility of Russia launching "massive strikes on Christmas." "Today, we held a Staff meeting on this matter, and the top priority was air defense: safeguarding our cities, villages, and communities, particularly on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th," Zelenskyy shared on X. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that the military must "ensure protection as much as they can," but he also noted a regrettable "shortage of air defense systems." Zelenskyy has previously shown interest in acquiring Patriot systems from the US, but he mentioned that they are costly and can take a significant amount of time to produce. Meanwhile, Ukraine has relied on European partners like the UK and Germany for air defense systems.

President Trump appoints special envoy to Greenland
US President Donald Trump's newly appointed envoy has expressed his desire to assist in "making Greenland part of the US." Denmark, which governs the autonomous island, is reportedly "deeply angered," according to its foreign minister. Denmark is outraged by the selection of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the new US special envoy to Greenland, as President Trump continues to exert pressure on the Nordic country and seeks to acquire the autonomous territory from Copenhagen. In naming Landry on Sunday, Trump — who has suggested he might take Greenland by force from ally Denmark if necessary — stated that the southern governor, "understands how crucial Greenland is to our National Security, and will vigorously promote our Country's Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World." Landry took to the social media platform X to express his gratitude to Trump for the appointment, stating, "It's an honor to serve you in this volunteer role to make Greenland a part of the US." On Monday, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen expressed that the decision left him "deeply angered" and insisted that Washington must honor Denmark's sovereignty, with Copenhagen pledging to summon the US ambassador in protest. "As long as we have a kingdom in Denmark that includes Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland," Rasmussen stated, "we cannot accept that there are those who undermine our sovereignty.
"Rasmussen told Denmark's TV 2 that he was "particularly upset by his [Landry's] remarks,"labeling them as "completely unacceptable," and added to the Reuters news agency: "We demand that everyone — including the US — must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark." Greenland's Prime Minister remarked that the news of the appointment, "might sound like a big deal," but noted that it "doesn't change anything for us here at home." "We will determine our future ourselves," he asserted. In a joint statement with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Nielsen emphasized: “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the US shall not take over.
